Swap Shop Sew is a sustainable fashion event that engages communities with circular fashion and brings together three areas of action:
– SWAP: A clothing exchange
– SHOP: A local textiles-based marketplace
– SEW: A garment repair and/or textiles upcycling workshop
A celebration of textiles and fashion, Swap Shop Sew provides an opportunity for you to engage with pre-loved clothing in a fun and social environment – and to keep second-hand clothing in active use to reduce textile waste.
You can also learn practical skills for repair, customisation and upcycling of clothing and/or accessories, and browse stalls in the venue.

Bring up to 10 garments that are in good condition. We welcome womenswear, menswear and childrenswear, bags and shoes (no underwear please) to “check in” and our volunteer team will then display on the rails. You will receive a Swap Ticket (listing the number of garments you brought). Before the swap opens at 3pm you can browse the textiles marketplace and take part in the sewing workshop.
Swap opens
3pm – 4pm
Use your Swap Ticket to “check out” the clothing you wish to take. You can take the number of garments you brought (listed on your Swap Ticket) or less. If you wish to take more items than you brought, we ask for a donation of £2 per garment to raise money for the Festival.
Swap Shop Sew was established in 2016 by fair and funky and Upcycle Fashion with funding from the Bright Green Community Trust. With the support of a strong volunteer team, the two Holmfirth based businesses have delivered 5 Swap Shop Sew events to a growing audience in the Holme Valley. The Swap Shop Sew founders are keen to collaborate with other groups, using the tried and tested Swap Shop Sew model to engage as many people as possible with alternative, more sustainable approaches to clothing consumption and to celebrate the clothing that already exists within our communities.
NOTE: Sangam Festival is also running a Swap Shop Sew event at the Festival Hub on the Piazza Huddersfield on Sunday 1 August, 2pm-4pm.
